# Customer Payment Methods

Customer Payment Methods connect a customer to a reusable way to pay. They are customer-owned items, while a Payment Profile is configuration that controls payment routing. A Transaction records a payment attempt; the Customer Payment Method represents the reusable method itself.

## What a method describes

A method identifies its customer, payment category, specific method, enabled status, and default status. Depending on its category, it supplies card, digital-wallet, or bank-account display details. Those details help a business distinguish a customer's methods without retrieving complete payment credentials.

The retrieval contract describes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ACH bank accounts. The add operation currently accepts cards only. Each operation's supported inputs determine what a consumer can do with a category.

## Defaults and availability

A customer can have a default method within each category. Making a card the default is separate from choosing a default digital wallet or bank account. Enabling a method makes it available for future payment selection; disabling it makes it unavailable. Deleting a method removes it from the customer's available methods.

Adding or managing a method does not itself create a sale, refund a transaction, or cancel a subscription or trial. Those actions have their own operations.

## Where payment methods are useful

Saved methods support repeat purchases and payment workflows without requiring a new payment input each time. Consumers can inspect a customer's methods, choose a specific supported method for a purchase, or manage which method is the category default. Existing pending sales can retain their current payment selection when no replacement is supplied.

Card display details may include the network, last four digits, funding source, and expiration. Wallet digits may differ from the physical card's digits. Bank-account display details may include the bank name and partial account/routing digits. Full card numbers, security codes, complete bank-account numbers, and wallet credentials are not returned by retrieval operations.
